Like an elf picking his way across a dangerous river, all he has to do is look out for the small smooth stepping stones, ignoring the tempting delights of the seemingly innocuous rocks which carry within them potential slips that could see him splash into the water. And before each leap, he must take a look left and then right. And if he can do that, then the gates of the Phoenix Park will beckon before him, the lush grass inviting him inside, rewarding him for a lifetime of service. Yes, that is just how close Galway is to having its first ever Uachtarain na hEireann. For a county that has provided leaders in almost every other sphere apart from Taoiseach and President, it is now very likely that Michael D will go into the last few weeks of the election campaign with the prize being his to lose. Althought there is many a slip twixt the cup and the lip, the manner in which the presidential debate has descended into verbal street-fighting has done a lot of the work for the Labour candidate.

A Ballinasloe man who broke into the home of a mother of four and subjected her to a sustained sexual assault while her son slept in the next room has been sentenced to 14 years with the final four years suspended.

Married father, Charlie Cawley (28), of Esker Hills, Ballinasloe pleaded guilty at the Central Criminal Court to the attempted rape and aggravated sexual assault of the woman in the early hours of February 27, 2010.

Lady Morgan and the Eccentric Mr Kirwan

Lady Morgan refers to Richard Kirwan (1733-1812) in several of her books, but her fullest portrait is found in The Book of the Boudoir (1829). She became acquainted with him during the last years of his life. She had by then published her most famous novel, The Wild Irish Girl (1806), and was the toast of Dublin and London literary society.

It was from her actor father that she first heard of Kirwan. “I remember, when I was a child, hearing a great deal of Mr Kirwan, and of chemistry: not that my family were particularly given to that, or any other of the sciences, though we had all a great calling to the arts. But the most eminent chemist of the day was an Irishman - and, still more, a Connaught man - and, more still, a Galway man.”

A poetry project called A Moment in Time has been set up and it will bring a short anthology of poems, selected by renowned poet Mark Roper, to the patients and staff of University Hospital and Merlin Park University Hospital.
