Open House Galway to feature on Nationwide next week

The RTE 1 Nationwide programme is due to feature Open House Galway, which takes place in association with the Irish Architecture Foundation, on the weekend of October 16-18. The programme, due to be broadcast at 7pm on Wednesday October 14, will preview many of the quality-designed buildings in the Open House programme as well as interviews with architects.

From luxurious penthouses and superbly designed family homes, to iconic public buildings such as the Marine Institute, the Custom House extension, the Western Regional Fisheries Board headquarters, and the refurbished Grammar School. HSE forum chairman says local ninety bed closures is ‘horrendous’

“Horrendous” is how the chairman of the HSE West’s regional health forum has described the fact that almost 90 beds have now been closed in local public hospitals due to budgetary cutbacks.

Commenting on the findings of a survey carried out by the Irish Nurses’ Organisation, Cllr Padraig Conneely said the bed losses were a “serious setback” and a major worry for the public, especially the sick and older people.

Galway toddler Chloe Flaherty was diagnosed with craniosynostosis, a medical condition which caused her brain to fuse with her skull. Following surgery in April, the two-year-old had a major seizure, and has been left permanently brain damaged. Her parents have been told their child will not have a normal quality of life, and will be lucky to live until early childhood.

Internationally acclaimed Galway crime author Ken Bruen has won Le Grand Prix De La Littérature Policière 2009 for the best non-French language crime novel.

Mr Bruen won the award for his novel Priest and he now joins the ranks of such other celebrated crime authors as Elmore Leonard, PD James, Thomas Harris, James Lee Burke, Michael Connelly, and Ian Rankin, who have also won the award.

Teams wanted for Townhouse Bar charity five-a-side

The Townhouse Bar is running its first Five-a-Side soccer blitz on Saturday October 24. The event will be in aid of local charity Enable Ireland.

Starting at 2pm, the blitz will take place at the Drum Soccer Park. The cost to enter a team is €100, with all money going to a worthy cause. Each team may have up to eight players, and all are guaranteed a minimum of three games.
