Arthritis group honours founder for thirty years ‘exemplary’ service

The founding member of the Galway branch of Arthritis Ireland will be honoured next week for his tireless efforts and commitment to the charity.

Noel O’Flaherty’s “exemplary” service to the organisation, which is celebrating 30 years in existence, will be marked by a special presentation at its reunion on Thursday March 24 at 8pm in the Galway Bay Hotel, Salthill. The group’s AGM will also take place on the night.

Last night in Dail Eireann, the first chapter of the new history of this country was written. We hope that with the introduction of this new Government that an end of public service gombeenism is in sight. Taoiseach Kenny in his inaugural speech spoke of the need for the Government and the governed to move closer and he acknowleged that to do that, he needs to build up trust, and to build that, he will use the rare commodity of truth. It is something that has been in rare supply in recent years. He must acknowledge too that politicians are in the Last Chance Saloon when it comes to honesty and integrity, and that his Government, more than ever, will have to be seen to be above party politics if it is to achieve what needs to be done. If it fails, it will go down in smoke, and with it, the body politic.

The government plan which was released at the weekend promises a lot, but if it can be achieved, it will represent a considerable body of work for the Kenny Government. Kenny knows that never before will a taoiseach have come to this post at such a crucial juncture and as such, this gives him tremendous scope with which to deliver. Because of his majority and his seizure of the moral high ground, he is well placed to introduce the reforms that are needed if Ireland is to recover from the trauma of the last few years.

Athenry man has money confiscated after judge rules it the proceeds of crime

A Galway resident has had €35,050 confiscated and forfeited to the State after a Dublin Circuit Criminal Court judge ruled it represented the proceeds of crime.

Anthony McAuley (46) of Brackloon, Kiltullagh, Athenry, was stopped by custom officers in Dublin Airport on March 1, 2009 as he was about to board a flight to Malaga. A search of his suitcase, which he had checked in, revealed €35,050 concealed in white envelopes hidden among his clothing.

Alice-Mary Higgins, daughter of Labour president and former Galway West TD Michael D Higgins, is to seek a seat in Seanad Éireann.

Ms Higgins will be contesting the elections to the upper house of the Oireachtas, seeking a seat on the Seanad’s cultural panel. Her father served as a senator from 1982 to 1987 and will be making a bid for the presidency later this year.
