NUI Galway joins stem cell website project

NUI Galway has joined forces with 90 other European universities and medical labs to raise public awareness and understanding about stem cell research.

The Regenerative Medicine Institute (REMEDI) at NUI Galway is part of a new EuroStemCell project which connects European citizens with stem cell research. The project’s main component is a website www.EuroStemCell.org which acts as a multi-lingual portal composed by researchers.

Former patients test negative for hepatitis C after healthcare worker scare

Some 340 people who were screened for hepatitis C in the west - after it emerged they may have been treated by a healthcare worker infected with the virus - have tested negative.

A total of 454 people were invited by the health authority for the precautionery test. Some 75 per cent of these were screened, according to a statement issued by the HSE.

Shop-lifter targets pharmacy three times in one day, court hears

A 32-year-old shoplifter who targeted an Oranmore pharmacy three times in just one day, stealing nearly €450 worth of goods, has been fined €300.

Andiswa Nwafar with an address given at Lisbrook House, Headford Road, appeared before Judge Mary Fahy at Galway District Court on Monday where she pleaded guilty to the theft of two Mitchum roll-on deodorants, two tea tree roll-on deodorants, two bio oils 125mls, three bio oils 200mls, two Palmolive bath aromatherapy, one Slendertone Full System, and one Slendertone accessory pack, total value €447.52, from Walsh’s Pharmacy, Orantown Centre, Oranmore, on August 17, 2009.

Fine Gael Galway Senator Fidelma Healy Eames has written to Galway City Council asking for a list of jobs to be completed so that the St James Road and Crescent area of Mervue will be brought up to a safe and acceptable standard for the families that live there.

“The local residents take great pride in their area and are frustrated by the fact that outstanding work has not been completed despite their constant requests. Mervue has been entered in the Pride of Place competition, which is a 32 county-wide competition. However, the residents feel at a distinct disadvantage while these outstanding jobs remain undone.
