High Court judge mystified by county council’s planning decision

A High Court judge has described as "very difficult to understand" Galway County Council's grant of planning permission for "a substantial housing estate outside Kinvara village on a blind corner, on a main road to Ballyvaughan and the Burren area".

It had been proposed to build 31 houses on a main road with a 100kph speed limit and the Council's permission also extended a town in an unplanned manner in an important tourist area, Mr Justice Peter Charleton said. The development would have resulted in the blind movement, in terms of sight lines for traffic, of many vehicle journeys to and from "this suburban type estate".

Cameron condemns Connolly for ‘voting with right wing parties’

The Labour Party has strongly criticised Independent councillor Catherine Connolly for voting with the right wing parties in order to pass the 2011 Galway City Council Budget.

Labour’s Cllr Billy Cameron said he was amazed that Cllr Connolly did not support Labour’s budgetary proposals at Monday’s city council meeting, especially as it had provided for substantial increases in housing maintenance funds - an issue Cllr Connolly has focused on strongly on over the last decade.

ACC Bank claims Galwaymen sought to defraud by transfering properties to wives

ACC Bank has claimed two Co Galway men who consented earlier this year to €3.2 million judgment orders in favour of the bank against them over unpaid property and development loans have sought to defraud the bank by transferring their interest in properties to their wives.

The bank claims the properties were transferred by Martin Fox and Gareth Duffy last June after it had initiated proceedings against them.

Witnesses sought following collision

Gardaí have appealed for witnesses following a collision between two cars on the Headford Road at the weekend.

The accident occurred at the Kirwan roundabout at around 10.45pm on Sunday. A silver Ford Focus, possibly with an 07 G registration, hit the rear of another vehicle. The driver of the Focus then left the scene. It is understood this car went in the direction of Sandy Road or Terryland. This vehicle may have sustained damage to the front wing mirror.

Funding allocated to remove African pond weed in Corrib

A grant of €20,000 has been allocated to deal with the African pond weed which is currently threatening the water and wildlife of Lough Corrib.

The weed in question, also known as Lagarosiphon major weed, could cause extreme risk to the clean water supply to Galway city and the surroundings towns and villages, according to Cllr Terry O’Flaherty.

Major funding announced for Galway youth cafés

Five youth cafes in Galway city and country are to receive major funds ranging from €3,500 to €40,000, according to Fianna Fáil Galway West TD Frank Fahey.

Two of the cafés are located in Galway city. The Youth Space Galway at Cathedral Square has been granted €40,000 while The Gaf Youth Cafe on Francis Street is to get €9,718.
