Water restrictions hit all three Aran Islands

Inis Meáin became the last of the Aran Islands to have water restrictions imposed this week. All three islands now have restrictions in place from 8pm to 8am daily in a bid to conserve water during drought conditions.

MADRA has asked people not to support the puppy industry following the discovery of 16 dehydrated and malnourished pups near Athenry last week.
Nine of the pups — a mixture of harrier hounds, boxers and spaniel cross puppies, aged between eight and 12 weeks — have died since they were found in an abandoned horsebox in Ballydavid, Athenry, on Tuesday July 17.

Record numbers have been attending the Galway International Arts Festival over the past 10 days and there is still lots more to see before the curtain comes down on GIAF18 this Sunday evening.
The Festival Garden in Eyre Square has proven a very popular development with the public, as locals, visitors, young, and old enjoy its relaxed atmosphere, food, and pop-up performances. Entrance to the Festival Garden is free and it is open from 10am to 10pm until Sunday. Also in the square is the Miracoco Luminarium, which finishes this Saturday. The replica of the moon is on view at the Human Biology building at NUI Galway and it will re-appear on the streets this weekend.

Scientists from the Marine Institute have discovered cold water coral reefs at previously unexplored depths off the west coast. The findings came about as part of the latest expedition at the furthest reaches of Irish waters.
The team of marine scientists have returned to Galway after spending three weeks at sea investigating Ireland’s deep ocean territory 300 miles off the west coast. The deep sea expedition led to new discoveries using the Marine Institute’s remotely operated vehicle (ROV) Holland 1 onboard the ILV Granuaile.
