Newcastle man jailed for threatening bouncer with imitation firearm

A Newcastle man who pointed an imitation firearm at a city centre bouncer and became so aggressive with gardai that pepper spray had to be used to restrain him was sentenced to 13 months in jail this week.

Charles Cunniffe (29) with an address at 6 Greenview Heights, Newcastle, appeared before Judge Aeneas McCarthy at Galway District Court on Monday where he pleaded guilty to being in possession of the realistic firearm in a public place at High Street on November 4, 2012. However, Cunniffe denied the charges of threatening and abusive behaviour at High Street and obstruction at Galway Garda Station on the same date.

Man smashes up own car when told it would be seized, court hears

A 26-year-old Athenry man who violently smashed up up his own car with an iron bar when told by a gardai that it was going to be seized, has been sentenced to a total of four months in jail.

John Ward with an address at 54 Cullairbaun, Athenry, appeared at Galway District Court on Monday charged with obstruction, threatening and abusive behaviour, production of an article in the course of a dispute/fight, and dangerous driving at Headford Road on September 15, 2012. A charge for criminal damage and driving without reasonable consideration were struck out.

Ireland’s ‘Queen of Rockabilly’ Imelda May will play the Galway Arts Festival Big Top on Friday July 26, joining an excellent Big Top line up that includes Grizzly Bear, Josh Ritter, and Glen Hansard.

Born in Dublin’s The Liberties area, Imelda has been working as a singer and musician since her teens but it as with the release of the Love Tattoo album in 2008 that she began to gain recognition in Ireland. In 2010 an appearance on BBC’s Later with Jools Holland saw her shoot to fame in Britain. Her Irish and British success was confirmed with the release that year of the album Mayhem.

HSE committed to speeding up hospital admission times for A&E patients

Speeding up hospital admission times for patients attending A&E departments is one of the top priorities for the Galway and Roscommon University Hospitals Group this year, according to its chief executive.

Bill Maher, the head of the group which comprises UHG, Merlin Park, Portiuncula and Roscommon Hospitals, said other aims are to maintain inpatient waiting time targets. This includes a reduction to an eight month waiting time for adults as well as meeting the outpatient waiting time target.
