After the first five months of the year, Renault is a clear leader in the scrappage sales polls with over 1,358 reclaims made by new Renault owners under the Government Scrappage Scheme.
In all there were 7,368 reclaims made to the end of May, according to statistics compiled by Revenue. Renault Ireland leads the scrappage table followed by Ford at 15 per cent and Skoda at 10 per cent.

There has been a broad welcome for the passing of the 2010 Road Traffic Bill which paves the way for reducing Ireland’s drink drive limit from 80mgs to 50mgs, along with a lower 20mg limit for learner drivers and professional drivers.
“Fifty mgs is the normal limit in most parts of Europe and indeed in most of the developed world,” says AA director of policy Conor Faughnan. “Ireland is something of an anomaly with its higher 80mg limit, and this brings us into line.”

Mary Cummins from Kilmessan in Co Meath entered the record books when she “scrapped” her 30-years-old Fiesta in favour of a new model.
Speaking at the handover of a new 2010 Ford Fiesta to Mary, John Robinson said: “As far as we know, this is the oldest car that has been traded in as part of the Government scrappage scheme. The car was first registered in May 1980 and is still going strong – it is a testament to the build quality of the original Fiesta and underlines why the car has continued to be a favourite with Irish motorists right up to today.”
