New research shows 23 per cent favour Hybrid for next car purchase

As Ireland continues to flatten the Covid-19 curve and starts slowly picking up the pieces from the devastating personal, societal, and economic impact the pandemic has had, new research reveals that Irish consumers still intend to make some key purchases they had planned before the virus hit.

The survey by renowned research company iReach, revealed that 28 per cent of Irish people are planning to buy a car in the next 12 to 18 months, with 14 per cent intending to purchase a new car, 13 per cent intending to buy second-hand, and one per cent planning on buying an imported vehicle. Twenty-three per cent say they will likely choose hybrid for their next car choice.

Car tests resume on a phased basis

The National Car Testing Service began a phased reopening of its service with the reopening 15 of the 47 centres in Ireland - only three of which are in the western region - Galway city, Athlone and Ballina.

In the short term the roadworthiness testing of vehicles will be on a limited basis and restricted only to those vehicles that had a test due date prior to 28 March 2020 (before the four-month extension to vehicle certificates of roadworthiness came into effect).

Renewed road safety appeal as deaths rise

The Road Safety Authority and An Garda Síochána are renewing their appeal for road users to take extra care after provisional collision figures for 2020 show a 17 per cent increase in the number of fatal crashes.

Sixty people have been killed in 56 fatal collisions up to May 27, 2020, compared to 55 deaths in 48 fatal collisions up to the same date last year, representing a nine per cent increase in road deaths compared to last year.

A fraudulent Facebook page purposing to be the National Driver Licence Service (NDLS) is inviting people to contact it via WhatsApp to apply for or renew their driving licence. They are then seeking payment of over €200.
