Q: I’m new to Ireland and I want to get working and advance my career. I’m applying for various positions but haven’t made much progress yet. Some people have told me that I should do voluntary work locally, but I’m not sure how much value that will bring at this stage. I really want to get paid work and don’t want to waste time – volunteering for a local sports club or charity doesn’t bring in badly needed money or get my foot on the career ladder. The organiser of Zero Day Con is advising third level institutions in Galway and across the country to urgently review their cybersecurity protocols, in the wake of a ransomware incident at one Irish university. It follows a message from Minister for Higher Education Simon Harris, who reiterated the support being offered by the authorities to MTU, where classes resumed on Tuesday.
Raluca Saceanu is CEO of Smarttech247, which powers major cybersecurity conference Zero Day Con. Ahead of the return of the Dublin event, she said “the disruption caused to students and staff at Munster Technological University is a nightmare scenario for any organisation. Finding yourself at the centre of an attack by ruthless bad actors can have a devastating effect on your business so without a doubt, prevention is better than cure. While investigations into how this incident unfolded are continuing, we strongly advise third level institutions all over the country to act now and review the measures they have in place that could be key to stopping something similar happening to them”.

The number of job opportunities in Galway will grow by 15% in the coming year, according to a new forecast from FRS Recruitment, one of the country’s leading recruitment agencies. This follows on from the 9% increase experienced in Galway in 2022.
While Galway experienced significant level of growth in 2022, the counties to experience the highest increases included Dublin (up 36%), Clare (up 31%), Wicklow (up 34%), Sligo (up 15%), Cork (up 15%) and Roscommon, which recorded the highest year on year increase with the number of roles more than doubling (up 101%).
