Human capital key to western region’s growth potential

Thu, Dec 16, 2010

The Western Region is well placed to achieve strong future growth, thanks to the investments of recent years and its educated and skilled workforce. In order to optimise that potential, not only for the good of the region but for national growth and recovery, continued improvements in infrastructure, innovation and the ‘3Es’ (enterprise, employment and education) are vital.

This assertion comes in a new Western Development Commission (WDC) Policy Briefing, 'How is the Western Region doing? Measuring regional development', which shows that although the Western Region experienced an overall improvement in its level of development during the boom years it continued to lag the rest of the state in critical areas such as income, poverty and labour force participation.

Every euro counts for hard-hit charities

Thu, Dec 16, 2010

Galway business Bookkeeping Partners (BKP), is urging fellow business owners to remember the less fortunate in the run up to the holiday season. BKP give one euro for every hour they bill to their Charity of the Year. “We find this a great way to donate as the amount we give is directly linked to our turnover,” explains Deirdre Geraghty, owner of BKP, “and as we donate monthly, it’s a little easier on the cashflow than trying to find a lump sum at year end.”

“It’s a very tough time for everyone but Charities are finding it exceptionally hard to survive” explained Ms Geraghty. “Financial support from the Government is constantly being cut and fund-raising has become extremely difficult. I realise money is tight for everyone right now but we need to remember that these Charities look after our communities and we all avail of their services at some time, either directly or through our families and friends.”

Thu, Dec 02, 2010

Sally O’Brien of Aran Island Ferries – together with other leading tourism representatives from around the island of Ireland hit the road in Australia recently, joining Tourism Ireland for a week-long sales blitz to promote Ireland as a top holiday destination. Playing on the huge popularity of talent competitions right now, the theme of this year’s trade mission was “Ireland’s Got Talent”, with 15 of Ireland’s leading tourism operators joining Tourism Ireland ‘Down Under’. Their busy schedule saw them meet with hundreds of Aussie and New Zealander travel agents, tour operators and carriers, as well as influential media contacts in the cities of Brisbane, Melbourne, Sydney and Auckland.

Jim Paul, Tourism Ireland’s Head of Australia & Developing Markets, said: “Australia and New Zealand are important markets for tourism to the island of Ireland, delivering over 150,000 visitors last year. Holidaymakers from these countries tend to stay considerably longer than the average visitor and enjoy visiting the various regions of Ireland. This type of trade mission, where we talk directly to influential travel agents and tour operators and tell them what makes the island of Ireland such a fantastic holiday destination, provides us with an excellent opportunity to grow business further from the market in 2011 and beyond. It is an excellent opportunity for the participants to showcase their product to important decision-makers around Australia and New Zealand and to encourage them to include the island of Ireland in their future holiday programmes.
