Volunteers sought for world’s number one marathon

Local heart charity Croí is seeking volunteers to take part in the ultimate charity challenge - the New York City Marathon on Sunday Nov 1.

Ranked as the number one marathon in the world, the 26.2 mile route allows participants see every inch of New York as the course passes through all five boroughs of the Big Apple.

Spectators line the route five deep throughout the course and the atmosphere on the day is “unbelievable” and “unique”, according to the charity.

“For the past nine years Croí has taken groups of runners and walkers from all over Ireland to participate in this event as a major fundraiser to help in the fight against heart disease,” says a spokesperson for Croí. “Monies raised from this year’s Croí New York City Marathon Tour will be spent on funding a range of new health promotion and education initiatives organised by Croí. Being part of the Croí team enables participants to avail of the full package on offer - including flights, accommodation, race entry, insurance, etc, as well as providing exclusive physiotherapy support on the ground in New York.”

Croí also organises pre-tour advice sessions on various issues facing a marathoner, including training programmes, correct footwear, nutrition, etc.

“The team meetings are a great way to get to know your fellow team members as well as an opportunity for first timers to ‘pick the brains’ of those with more experience at marathon running,” says Croí chief executive Neil Johnson. ”Each year, approximately 60 per cent of the Croí Team are first-time marathoners. The team ranges in age from 20 to 70-year-olds with elite runners and walkers all being part of the one team.”

Places on the marathon are like “gold dust”, according to the charity and are offered on a first-come, first served basis with demand always exceeding availability. To book contact Seona at (091 ) 544310 or email [email protected] or text NYCM followed by your name and address to (086 ) 8193692
