Drama and GAA at Coole

Coole Park will this evening play host to a production of The World’s Wife by Mephisto Theatre as part of the Coole Spring Cultural Programme.

Female figures from the worlds of myths, fairytales, and history finally get a word in with The World’s Wife, a playful stage show based on the poetry collection of the same name from Carol Ann Duffy. Dragging overlooked characters from the past into modern contexts, The World’s Wife is an accessible, fun-filled, frolic through the dark world of the forgotten female. Using Mephisto’s trademark visceral style, the show features characters such as Mrs Freud, Medusa, Queen Kong, and Mrs Darwin. The silent wives are about to speak and their stories are not to be missed. The play will take place from 8pm to 9pm.

The heritage programme continues on Monday nights from 8pm to 10pm with the local history publications course. This course provides participants with an introduction to local history and how go about producing a local history publication.

Next Monday night’s lecture is entitled Referencing Sources – Footnotes/Endnotes and Bibliography Methodology. The lecture is by Dr Gabriel O’Connor, who has lectured for National University of Ireland Maynooth for its local history outreach programme. He also is a member of the Old Tuam Society and Galway County Heritage Forum. The course is now fully booked. Contact Coole Park if you have any queries as it may be possible to attend as there is not usually full attendance on the night.

On Thursday March 5 Gael Linn will present two Louis Marcus films, Christy Ring (1964 ) and Peil (1962 ). These films feature sporting greats of the 1960s in both hurling and football. Additional material consists of evocative Amharc Éireann newsreel footage of major Gaelic games from the years 1959 to 1963. Each film has an instructional section at its core, preceded by a nostalgic look back at the past, followed by extended highlights of a major game. Both films feature colour footage from games rich in atmosphere and detail, accompanied by a rousing soundtrack of music from the Artane Band. Commentaries for both films were written by Breandán Ó hEithir, author of Over The Bar, a personal relationship with the GAA (1984 ) and voiced by Pádraig Tyers. The screening will take place from 8pm to 9pm.

All these events are free to the public and take place at Coole Park Visitor Centre.
