Dublin slashes affordable house prices,

Dublin City Council’s plans to reduce the price of Affordable houses by 25 per cent must be followed by the Galway city and county councils, according to Fine Gael Cllr Brian Walsh.

Cllr Walsh said the announcement from Dublin is welcome, but that “questions need to be asked” about the long delay in Galway’s local authorities responding to the fall in property prices.

“For months now, it has been apparent that the concept of affordable housing was farcical as there was little difference between market and affordable prices,” said Cllr Walsh. “However, the Galway City Council continued to send letters to applicants offering so called ‘affordable’ houses.”

He is now calling on City Hall and County Buildings to follow Dublin’s example and cut the prices of their affordable homes so “the huge waiting lists can be tackled”.
