The Humanist Association of Ireland will celebrate its 21st anniversary with a major conference in The Salthill Hotel on Thursday October 11 and Friday 12.
The theme of the conference is Being Good Without God at school’, Appraising Our Primary Education – is it fit for the 21st century? which will look at ideas of secularism in education.
The issue will be addressed by speakers from the Irish National Teachers Association, Educate together Schools, parents of school and pre-school aged children, parents whose children have gone through the school system, and those with backgrounds in education and secularism including Redemporist Fr Gerry O’Connor, One in Four’s Deirdre Kenny, and Labour senator Ivana Bacik.
The conference will also be a chance for people to find out and talk about the philosophy and ideology of humanism.
Saturday will be the 21st ‘birthday bash’ for the HAI. Dinner will be served from 7.30pm, with music by award winning indie/funk/reggae band Leading Armies from 9.30pm.
On Sunday the closing address will be given by Dr David McConnell, honorary president of the Humanist Association of Ireland and professor of genetics at Trinity College Dublin.
