Breathnach and Farrell join Irish at Euro champs

Two Galway athletes have been selected to compete for Ireland at the European Team Championships in Estonia this weekend.

Sean Breathnach of Galway City Harriers will compete in the shot putt, while Craughwell AC’s Cathriona Farrell competes in the high jump.

Both athletes have been in impressive form this season, with Breathnach winning the National Indoors title and Farrell claiming the Universities and National u-23s .

Galway Senior Track and Field Championships

Ollie Mullins of Craughwell AC added to his recent Monivea half marathon win by claiming the county 10km championship in a time of 34.49, after a riveting duel with GCH athlete Brian O’Connor who took second in 35.56. Mullins pulled away in the second half of the race and looked very strong in the closing laps. GCH man Richard Farnan was third in 36.19, and first of the senior athletes home.

Jane Ann Meehan of Athenry took the honours in the women’s event, leading all the way and winning in 38.20. Second home was Helen Corbett of GCH, who took the Masters title in the process in 38.54, just ahead of Sinead Brody, also of GCH, in 38.58. Martin Kearney of GCH claimed the Over 50 title in 38.58.

GCH ‘s Brendan Staunton took three golds and silver at senior level across all the field events, with gold coming in discus, shot and hammer. Eleanor Whyte of GCH took senior gold in the 400m. Mary Barrett Loughrea took the senior women’s shot putt and discus titles, while clubmate Caroline Clancy won the 1500m senior gold.

Milltown Run for Ollie 10km

This charity fundraising race for local man Ollie Burke goes from strength to strength and this year almost 600 runners and walkers turned out on a super day for running. The 10k race was won by Tuam AC stalwart Dan O’Rourke in 38.17, ahead of Daire Comer and Padraic Donlon in second and third. The first lady home was Ruth Lynch in 42.20
