Keady hopes home crowd will help against Cork

This Sunday sees Galway WFC host Cork Women’s FC in Eamonn Deacy Park on Sunday (2pm ) in their penultimate home game of their first season in the Bus Éireann WNL.

Galway will be hoping to return to winning ways after a disappointing 3-2 defeat to DLR Waves in Dublin at the weekend.

Galway will be favourites for Cork’s visit, but manager Nigel Keady is taking nothing for granted.

“Last time out they defended very well against us and we found it difficult to score against them, only defeating them 1-0.

“Cork have also strengthened their squad since then, so we know we need to lift ourselves for the game. Hopefully if we are able to get our passing game going, and get the crowd behind us early, we will be able to get a result.”

Last weekend DLR took an early lead on 12 minutes through Sharon Cullen, but four minutes later Galway were level when Sinead Taylor dispossessed DLR keeper Avril Kilkelly and finished to an open goal.

However, with the aid of a gale force wind, Silvia Gee’s speculative shot from just inside the Galway half lobbed Galway keeper Mellisa Casserly to put the Waves 2-1 up at half time.

Against the run of play Cullen grabbed her second goal for DLR on the hour mark. A long ball into the box was touched on to the crossbar and rebounded into the penalty area, and, in the resulting goalmouth scramble, the ball fell to Cullen who finished from six yards.

Galway, however, regrouped and dominated to the finish. Manager Nigel Keady, having gambled on three at the back, brought on strikers Eleanor Stafford and Susie Cunningham. Stafford hit the crossbar on 64 minutes and Lynsey McKey saw her goal-bound shot turned out for a corner by Kilkelly with a wonderful save. With 15 minutes remaining a Lucy Hannon cross found Sinead Taylor and the WNL’s top scorer headed home to make it 3-2.

Despite creating numerous changes, Galway could not find an equaliser and the hosts took all three points.
