Galway women in first cup game at Deacy Park

Galway WFC can expect a tough encounter with neighbours Castlebar Celtic when they open their Bus ÉireannWNL Cup campaign in Eamonn Deacy Park on Sunday.

The Galway women go into the match after an unexpected break from action last weekend when their planned opener against Shamrock Rovers was postponed due to an unplayable pitch in Dublin.

Galway WFC have been forewarned of Castlebar’s ambition after they surprised their pool with a 4-4 draw with league leaders Raheny United. As a result the pool remains wide open, but Galway will need to push for a win to stay in contention for this season’s cup.

Castlebar and Galway met three weeks ago in the league in a thrilling game that ended in a 1-1 draw. However the Galway women will want to go one better in this first cup fixture and they have been helped with the return of Lucy Hannon from injury.

Manager Nigel Keady is looking forward to the game and some strong Galway support.

“Our first home derby with Castlebar three weeks ago was a great game with a fantastic atmosphere. We led for most of the game with Castlebar equalising in the dying moments.

“Now we need to ensure we can bring our first-half performance from that day for the full 90 minutes and hopefully come out with a victory to keep the cup dream alive.”
