Deputy Ó Cuív to hold meeting on farming cuts

Fianna Fáil’s agriculture spokesperson Éamon Ó Cuív is to hold a meeting with local farmers in Shrule, Co Mayo, tomorrow to discuss reductions in CAP funding and cuts to lower and middle income farmers.

In an effort to continue his campaign against farming cuts Deputy Ó Cuív has organised the meeting to take place at Craddocks in Shrule at 8pm on December 14. The aim of the meeting is to consult local farmers about the challeges they are facing at this time.

Speaking ahead of the meeting, Deputy Ó Cuív said: “The Budget for next year includes a range of measures that will hit lower and middle income farmers in the west and north west particularly hard. I want to give farmers an opportunity to voice their concerns about this and about the impact of reform of the Common Agriculture Policy.

“It is my strong belief that funding under CAP must not be reduced. I also believe that more needs to be done to support smaller farmers in this region who are being neglected by the Minister for Agriculture Simon Coveney, who is focused on looking after big high-earning farmers in the south.

“Anyone with questions or concerns about these issues is invited to come along to the meeting on Friday. Representatives of the major farming organisations will also be there,” said Deputy Ó Cuív.
