Jewel thief given sentence with half suspended

A man who brandished a claw hammer during the robbery of a city centre jewellers last February, was jailed for three years with the final 18 months of the sentence suspended, at Galway Circuit Criminal Court.

Russian, Dimitriz Michailov, of no fixed abode, pleaded guilty to the robbery of an estimated €20,000 worth of jewellery from a member of staff at Diamonds & Gold jewellers, Cross Street, Galway, on February 29 last.  He also pleaded guilty to having a claw hammer in his possession with the intention that it be used in the course of the robbery.

After hearing evidence given by Garda Shane Igoe in relation to the robbery and submissions by defence barrister, Geri Silke, Judge Raymond Groarke sentenced Michailov to three years in prison and suspended the final 18 months on condition that the accused keep the peace and be of good behaviour for three years.  He backdated the sentence to April 29 last, when the accused was first taken into custody on these charges.
