Gairmscoil Mhuire Athenry get Irish language award

Athenry Vocational School, Gairmscoil Mhuire, was recently awarded the Connacht title for the coveted Comórtas G award from Glór na nGael for its promotion and use of Irish.

As the Connacht winners Gairmscoil Mhuire was one of the few bilingual winners in the country from more than 1,000 entrants.

Students in Gairmscoil Mhuire have founded an Irish club known as Club Raifteirí where the students meet at lunchtimes in speaking and playing games as Gaeilge. As part of Club Raifteirí the students and their teachers have compiled a school blog, Blag Raifteirí, an online magazine, Ríomhiris Raifteirí, and their own radio station, Raidió Raifteirí, on site where the students listen to Irish pop songs and news reports from Raidió Rí-RÁ.

The staff and management are very proud of the students’ achievement and congratulate all involved. Gairmscoil Mhuire also hosts a summer course for students who wish to improve their Irish oral and written skills.
