Sexual assault accused sent for trial

A 35-year-old-man, who denies four counts of sexual assault, has been sent forward for trial.

The man, who cannot be named for legal reasons, appeared before Galway District Court on Monday where Garda Seamus McDonnell gave evidence of serving the book of evidence on the accused on the morning of the court sitting.

Inspector Brendan Carroll told the court that the Director of Public Prosecutions has consented to the accused being sent forward for trial in relation to all charges.

The man is charged with sexually assaulting a female on a date unknown between June 1, 2007, and December 31, 2008, and three further counts of sexually assaulting a second female at three different locations in the city on dates unknown between June 1, 2007, and December 31, 2008, and a date known between October 3 and 4, 2009, contrary to Section 2 of the Criminal Law (Rape )(Amendment ) Act 1990.

Judge Mary Fahy ordered the man to be returned on bail to the current sittings of Galway Circuit Criminal Court where it is expected that a date would be set for the trial. Conditions of bail were for the man to remain at his address, to surrender his passport, sign on once a week at a local Garda station, and to stay away from the injured parties. Free legal aid was also granted plus one junior counsel.
