Learn to knit with Knit One, Purl One

Ard Bia will launch its Knit One, Purl One knitting classes later this month.

The knitting class is the brainchild of Ard Bia’s Aoibheann McNamara and knitting expert Anne Ó Máille of Ó Máille, High Street.

Women all over the world are taking up their knitting needles and rediscovering this creative and relaxing pastime. The Wednesday evening knitting classes will be held in Ard Bia at Nimmo’s from November 19 and will run for four weeks. The classes will introduce new knitters to the joy of knitting and reintroduce knitters that may be a little rusty. Ms Ó Máille has designed a number of creative patterns for everyone to begin with.

Ó Máille on High Street was founded in 1938 by Pádraic Ó Máille and is one of Ireland’s oldest established clothing stores. Pádraic Ó Máille began the tradition of selling socks and Aran sweaters made by women on the Aran Islands. The family continues this tradition by employing 200 women from the west to knit Aran sweaters for the shop. Anne Ó Máille wants to carry on this tradition and hopes that organising knitting classes will ensure knitting is passed on to the next generation. She previously taught knitting classes in the US and regularly hosts knitting demonstrations in the High Street premises. In the past she has knitted for Oprah Winfrey’s ‘Women’s Hands’ project.

The Ard Bia art collective has reinvented contemporary living in the west. A feast of the senses, the Ard Bia concept represents a lifestyle choice connected through the experience of food, wine, art, style, and design.
