Crowds flock to first auction of 2011

The Victoria Hotel was bursting at the seams as an unprecedented crowd arrived at the hotel all eager to witness the first O’Donnellan & Joyce auction of the season. The excitement was palpable among the crowd and at one stage there was a bit of an anxious moment when bidders were afraid their bids would be missed because the crowd was so large.

The first property to be auctioned was No 1 Blake’s Lane in Bohermore, and the bids came in fast and furious. No 1 Blake’s Lane is a small one bedroom cottage that had an advised minimum value of €60,000. The bidding opened at €32,000 and after a total of 46 bids on the property, Colm O’Donnellan brought the hammer down and the property was sold at €78,000. A big round of applause went up and the purchasers were congratulated. The solicitor with carriage of sale was Susan Egan of Emerson & Conway, St Francis Street, Galway.

Next on the list was No 67 Moyola Park in Newcastle, a three bed semi in need of refurbishment. Again there was huge interest in this property because of its location and proximity to NUIG and UHG. Bidding opened at €150,000 and, after a total of 21 bids with three people chasing the property, the hammer finally came down and the property was sold for €179,000. Again the large crowd burst into applause and the happy purchasers signed the contract. The solicitor with carriage of sale was Peter Crowley of CP Crowley & Co, Merchants Road, Galway.

The third property to be auctioned was No 19 Sycamore Court in Renmore, another great three bed semi with a self-contained apartment to the side. Bidding opened at €150,000 and after six bids the property was withdrawn at €160,000. After some negotiation the property was sold and the contract signed. The solicitor with carriage of sale on this property was Bernadette Burke Solicitor & Co, Headford.

The last property on the list was No 2 Reddington Road, Shantalla, a lovely three bed terraced property close to NUIG and UHG in a very popular neighbourhood. This property failed to sell and was withdrawn at €160,000; it is now for sale by private treaty and offers are invited. Viewing is by appointment and can be arranged by calling Anne Harding on (086 ) 8173335.

O’Donnellan & Joyce’s next auction will take place on Friday April 8 in the Victoria Hotel at 3pm, with eight properties going under the hammer. Full details will be announced later.
