Galway rowers head to Europeans

Two Galway rowers have been included in the Irish team to compete in the European Rowing Championships at Montemor-o-Velho, Portugal, next week.

Rowing Ireland selected just two crews - a women's lightweight double and a men's lightweight double scull. Tribesmen's Siobhan McCrohan pairs up with UCD's Claire Lambe, and NUIG's Niall Kenny partners Mark O'Donovan from Skibbereen.

Siobhan McCrohan has enjoyed a successful ear so far, starting with a win at the Tribesmen Head of the River in March - her sole domestic event so far this year. This was followed by an experimental outing in Duisburg where she stroked the quad-scull to within a half-length of Germany, and then on to World Cup No 1 in Bled, Slovenia. There, teamed up with Claire for the first time, they shocked the established order by winning their heat and forcing themselves into the exclusive A-final competition for the top six, returning a respectable sixth place.

Niall Kenny was second in the double scull at Duisburg, and then went on to be part of the Irish quad scull which earned a silver medal at the World u-23 championships in Belarus last month.
