Salthill face defending champs in title decider

Salthill Devon face defending champions Longford Town in the FAI Umbro Women's u-14 Challenge Cup final this Sunday in Athlone (3pm ).

Salthill last won this competition in 2005 and hopes are high the current squad can repeat the feat, against the current title holders who will present a stiff test.

The Salthill girls advanced to the final with a hard-fought win over a fancied Peamount United side in Dublin two weeks ago, having beaten Cregmore, Yeats United and Cliffoney Celtic in earlier rounds.

Managers Richie Walsh and Maurice Gillen have a strong squad, including goalkeepers Caoimhe O'Reilly and Anesi Ingunma who are both capable net minders. At the back Salthill are marshalled by team captain Shauna Fox and Ireland panellist Cadhla Gillen, with Kerrie Flaherty, Emily Naughton and Carra Withero adding attacking flair to their defensive qualities.

Sarah Cahill and Kelly Dunleavy add steel to the team, while the flair of Ireland panellists Katie Carter and Ciara Lynagh, added to the skill and pace of Roisin Jacob and Shauna Gallagher, makes for a formidable midfield unit.

Up front Eavan Lowndes, Aoife Walsh and Rebecca Rooney will cause any defence problems.

A large crowd is expected to travel from Galway to the midlands venue for this clash which, if Salthill win, would represent their sixth national title in as many years.
