Victim called “Fat lump of shite” in Leonardo lobby confrontation

A MAN who threatened to “do a job on” an individual and called him a “fat lump of shite” during a confrontation in the lobby of the Leonardo Hotel had a two-month sentence imposed on him at Galway District Court this week.

Oliver Deely pleaded guilty to public order offences when he appeared from custody before Judge Adrian Harris.

The Court was told his victim, who he was acquainted with, had been canvassed to make a victim impact statement but he declined to do so.

Gary McDonald BL (defending ) pleaded that his client had taken umbrage at something the injured party had said in the hotel lobby and he now wished to apologise for his behaviour.

He added that Deely was burdened by alcohol “but he was sober now since he went into custody.” His client was “a different man when sober” and was trying to get into Cluain Mhuire to get help with his issue.

The Court heard he had 38 previous convictions, including four convictions for threatening to kill.

Judge Harris noted the defendant had been in custody since October 15 and he imposed a two-month sentence backdated until then.

Deely also had a two-month suspended sentence triggered and asked that this be dealt with as well.

Judge Harris decided to activate one month of this sentence and for it to run consecutively with the first sentence he imposed.
