A YOUNG man jumped from a moving taxi and fled drug unit Gardaí, it was alleged, when he appeared before Galway District Court on Monday, November 2.
Before Judge Adrian Harris was Samuel Akanni, 145 Coilte Mhuirlinne, Ballybane, Galway, charged with possession of drugs. Other charges may be proferred.
The Judge heard Garda evidence that it will be alleged that drug unit Gardaí were on patrol on April 2 last and were in the process of stopping a taxi the defendant was being carried in when he jumped from the vehicle while it was still moving and fled.
Gardaí pursued him on foot and observed him throwing away small plastic bags containing white powder, the Court heard.
When they caught up with him he resisted arrest and Gardaí had to use pepper spray and handcuffs to restrain him, the Judge was told.
After his arrest it is alleged he was searched while in custody and seven bags containing ketamine and a small knife were found on his person. The Court was told the ketamine was valued at €600.
Sean Acton solr (defending ) pointed out that the charge sheet appeared to suggest the substance found was cocaine not ketamine.
Prosecuting Garda Sgt Damien Prendergast said he would clarify this matter for the defence.
The case was adjourned until the February 8 sitting of the Court.
