A vehicle on the Dublin Road in Galway was clocked speeding almost double the 50kmph limit by gardaí over the bank holiday weekend.
This example of a vehicle travelling 93kmph on an urban speed limit road was highlighted by An Garda Sciochána as an extreme illustration amongst the 4,842 speeding detections it made nationwide from Thursday, October 22, to Tuesday, October 27.
Other “lifesaver offence detections” included 218 reports of intoxicated driving, 391 incidents of driving with a mobile phone, and 109 individuals not wearing seatbelts.
During the extended weekend roads policing operation, there were three fatalities as a result of three fatal collisions on the roads. The total number of fatalities on Irish roads to date this year is 154. There were 190 road deaths over the 12 months of 2025.
Gardaí conducted both statutory Mandatory Intoxicant Testing checkpoints and regular, high-visibility policing checkpoints over the four day period. A total of 218 people were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
During the operation, 500 drivers were detected holding a mobile phone or not wearing a seatbelt.
An Garda Síochána and the Road Safety Authority continue to urge all road users to support their efforts to keep people safe on the roads.
As the evenings get darker, An Garda Síochána is urging road users to be mindful of - and take extra care around - vulnerable road users, in particular pedestrians and cyclists. Cyclists and pedestrians should ensure they are clearly visible in darker conditions and always observe their surroundings.
Their advice is: slow down and adhere to the speed limit. Never drive under the influence of drink or drugs. Wear your seatbelt and do not get distracted by mobile devices when you are driving.
