The course of true love never jogs smoothly for bailed bridegroom

The ongoing saga of a lovelorn Ballinasloe man focused on bail conditions imposed on him after he was arrested three times on his stag night took another twist when he returned yet again to court to plead with a judge for the easing of these conditions.

The man had already stated at a previous sitting of Ballinasloe District Court that because of the bail conditions imposed by Gardaí following his triple arrest on his stag night, he'd had to postpone his wedding by a month.

Then he pleaded to be allowed to travel to and reside in Lifford in Donegal to be close to his betrothed, but Gardaí pointed out to the judge that they couldn’t verify an address in Lifford where there was a welcome for him. At a subsequent court sitting, the prospective groom told Judge James Faughnan that he no longer wished to travel to Donegal.

He returned once more to the most recent sitting of Ballinasloe District Court with another request. This time it was for an amendment to his curfew conditions which are part of his bail.

Bernie Corcoran, 4, An Creggaun, Ballinasloe, told Judge Faughnan that he was finding his 9pm to 9am curfew onerous as he liked to go for a three-to-four mile run in the evenings, and asked for the curfew to be pushed back to 10pm to facilitate his exercise regime.

“Why don’t you have your run earlier?” the judge asked, and was informed that his busy gym schedule might clash with this.

Garda Sgt Christy Brown told the court that the State was objecting to any changes in bail conditions, pointing out that Mr Corcoran had himself agreed to all conditions when he was granted bail in the first place.

The full facts of the charges faced by the defendant will not be aired in court until the current legal aid dispute is resolved, as Mr Corcoran’s solicitor is on strike.
