St Mary’s GAA Club, Athenry, has been awarded €10,000 through the Huawei Solar Sports Scheme to fund its solar panel project, delivering a direct boost for club members and the wider community.
The club is one of five grassroots sports organisations across Ireland selected to receive a €10,000 grant under the €50,000 initiative.
The funding will allow the club to cut energy costs and lower their carbon footprint, benefiting its members across different ages and teams, as well as the local community. The Huawei Solar Sports Scheme is supporting projects that improve club facilities, widen participation, and strengthen youth and community programmes nationwide.
Successful clubs are also being encouraged to take sustainable approaches to their projects, reflecting the scheme’s focus on long-term community development and environmental responsibility.
Calvin Lan, CEO of Huawei Ireland, said sports clubs are at the heart of communities across Ireland.
“We are proud to back the volunteers, players and families who keep them thriving. This grant will help St Mary’s GAA Club invest in sustainability and its future, creating a lasting benefit for members and the wider community.”
Speaking on behalf of St Mary’s GAA Club, Club Officer, David Casserly said the awarding of this grant to St Mary’s GAA Athenry will allow them to install solar PV panels which will greatly benefit everyone involved in the club.
“It will significantly reduce energy costs, help us achieve Green Club status, and allow us to channel much-needed funds into other projects. Thank you, Huawei Ireland,” he said.
