Free public talk on supporting grieving children

HopeSpace, the children’s grief support service serving Galway and surrounding counties, is hosting a free public talk titled ‘Supporting Grieving Children’ on Monday, October 12, 2026, at Dexcom Stadium.

The event will feature a keynote presentation from renowned bereavement expert Liz Gleeson. Following the keynote, attendees will hear from Cathal Forde of Connacht Rugby, followed by a presentation from Katie-Anne O’Toole of Jacinta’s Smile, a charity dedicated to supporting bereaved siblings.

The event will conclude with a question-and-answer session, giving attendees the chance to engage with the speakers, followed by an opportunity to connect informally with the speakers and members of the HopeSpace team.

Speaking ahead of the event, HopeSpace Chairperson Myles McHugh said children and young people process grief differently than adults, often expressing their feelings through behaviour, changes in mood, or withdrawal.

“While every child’s journey is unique, surrounding adults - from parents and family members to teachers and coaches - play a vital role in helping them feel safe and understood.

“This session is designed to offer clear, compassionate guidance on recognising how children experience loss, normalising their reactions, and finding practical ways to support them through their grief,” he said..

“The talk is a vital resource for anyone who supports grieving children and young people—including parents, grandparents, family members, friends, teachers, youth workers, sports club coaches, and health and social care professionals.”

Admission is free, but prior booking at [email protected] is advised.
