For over two decades, Slemons Daybreak and fuel shop has been more than just a local shop; it has been the community hub of Furbo.

Since opening its doors, this family-run business has offered everything from plants to popcorn and a warm welcome to everyone who walks through the door.

Owner Nigel Slemon bought the local shop in 2005, acknowledging that when the shop came up on the market, he “jumped in and purchased it without really thinking.” This leap of faith has blossomed into a thriving business.

It truly is a family affair. Nigel’s children, Michael, Caoimhe and Katie, all work or have previously worked in the shop. Some of the staff have been a part of the team for over 18 years, proving that family doesn’t always have to be blood.

“When it’s a family business, you’re naturally proud to have your family in it, and you would hope that they would manage it into the future,” explained Nigel.

Slemons have supported many local GAA clubs and teams to give back as much as they can to the people that support them, saying that they “love to support and wouldn’t say no.”

After overcoming a recession and a pandemic, the support from the local community helped Slemons to bounce back stronger than ever. Nigel explained that shopping locally not only supports the smaller businesses but also provides an opportunity to see neighbours and friends.

Looking to the future, Slemons hopes to extend the shop to include an off-licence. The owner hopes that the shop will stay in the family for the next generation to take over.

Slemons has to thank all of their customers over the last 21 years, expressing their gratitude for “the faces they see day-in and day-out.”
