When someone we love is no longer with us, having the right person beside you can make all the difference.

For Dylan Kelly, caring for families through those difficult moments has never simply been a job. It is something he has felt called to do from a very young age a vocation built on compassion, resilience and, above all, caring for people.

Long before Kelly & Family Funeral Directors existed, Dylan already knew where he wanted life to take him. School was never where his heart was, as he had already found his calling in funeral directing. But one teacher saw something in him and refused to give up.

Even when Dylan wasn’t particularly interested in school, she continued to encourage him, support him and, most importantly, care about him. She believed in him and never let him give up. Dylan remains deeply grateful for that. He believes the resilience she helped develop has stayed with him throughout his life. He will always carry the care she showed him and the memory of someone who believed in him when she could easily have walked away.

Finding his calling

Dylan’s interest in funeral directing began following the funeral of his grandfather Benny Kelly. He was drawn to the people who quietly supported families at their most vulnerable. While still at school, he arranged work experience with a funeral director and, at just sixteen, purchased his first hearse.

That early calling would eventually become Kelly & Family Funeral Directors.

Building the business has not always been easy. There have been long hours, difficult days, financial pressures and the constant responsibility of being available when families need you.

But Dylan has always believed those pressures should remain behind the scenes. When a family comes to Kelly & Family Funeral Directors, they should see calm, compassion and professionalism. For Dylan, the family in front of him always comes first.

Whether arranging a traditional funeral, a budget funeral, a personalised celebration of life, flowers, transport, caskets, urns or grave maintenance, the aim is always to listen, understand and help families make the choices that are right for them, without pressure or judgement.

A family effort

Dylan is also the first to acknowledge that he does not do this alone. His father, Paul, has been an important part of the journey, providing practical help, experience and guidance. He is someone Dylan can turn to and rely on, particularly when the pressures of running a business become demanding.

Paul’s support goes beyond the practical side of the business. He understands the responsibility Dylan carries and has been there throughout the journey, offering the experience and reassurance that only family can provide.

His partner, Holly, also plays an important role. With her experience in healthcare and end of life care, she brings a valuable understanding of people, families and the realities of loss. Whether helping behind the scenes, offering another perspective or simply being there for Dylan, Holly is an important part of the team behind the service families receive.

Together, Paul and Holly provide Dylan with something invaluable — people around him who understand the importance of what he does and share his commitment to caring for others. Dylan is also grateful for the guidance he has received from the wider community.

Over the years, families, friends, colleagues and local people have shared their experiences, advice and feedback. Dylan has listened, learned and allowed those conversations to help shape the way he runs the business.

For him, being part of a community means more than simply providing a service. It means listening to people, learning from them and being there when they need someone. The trust of the community has helped Dylan grow both personally and professionally, while keeping him grounded in the values on which the business was built.

The people behind the service

Dylan also recognises the many other people who help make the work possible from colleagues, suppliers, florists, transport providers, cemeteries and others whose work often happens quietly in the background. Each plays an important part in allowing Dylan and his family to provide the level of care they strive for.

And then, most importantly, there are the families. Every family has a story, and every person who has passed away mattered deeply to someone. Dylan understands the trust involved in being asked to care for a loved one and help a family say goodbye. It is a responsibility he never takes lightly. His role is not to take over that experience, but to quietly guide families through it, offering reassurance when it is needed and giving them space when words are not enough.

Looking back on the journey from buying his first hearse as a teenager to building a family run funeral business, Dylan remains grateful to Paul, to Holly, to his team, to the community and to every family who has trusted him.

But he also remains particularly grateful to the teacher who refused to let him give up. The care she showed him is something he will always carry, and the resilience she helped instill continues to guide him. At a time when Dylan already believed he knew the path he wanted to take, she reminded him that believing in someone and standing by them can make a lasting difference. It is a lesson that has stayed with him.

For every family who has trusted Kelly & Family Funeral Directors, Dylan has one simple message: Thank you. Thank you for allowing us into your lives at such difficult times. Thank you for trusting us with your loved ones. And thank you to everyone who has supported us, worked alongside us, offered advice and helped us continue to do what we do.

The challenges of running a business may not always be visible, and Dylan intends to keep them that way. Because when a family needs him, his focus is not on the difficulties behind the scenes. It is on them. That is the vocation he chose all those years ago and it remains the reason he continues to serve.
