Galway United Women’s stuttering title bid ran out of road last Saturday at home to Bohemians.
It was an unlikely double against United for the away side who were organised and worked hard. However, the only goal of the game came as a result of a mix-up in the home defence.
United were somewhat blunt in attack. Aobhínn Donnelly, Emma Doherty and Ava Mullins sought to interchange up front but failed to get in behind the Bohs’ defence. Lucy Jayne Grant was industrious on the left but United failed to carve an opening.
They nonetheless travel to Wexford this Saturday with plenty to play for. Their competition for second, Shelbourne, also lost last weekend. United do have the advantage of this game in-hand on Saturday.
With games against Athlone and Shels to follow, it is crucial for United to get something out of their long trip to the south-east.
Wexford have been inconsistent. They have had good wins over Treaty and Rovers at home but have also lost three of their last six.
There is undoubted quality in their ranks. Megan Smyth-Lynch should miss out however after being dismissed in their draw against Sligo. Maria O’Sullivan is well known in these parts as a capable stopper. Captain Ciara Rossiter leads the team with energy and quality in the middle. Courtney Chochol is the league’s third top scorer only behind United’s Doherty and Athlone Town's Dana Scheriff.
Undoubtedly, United possess enough quality to get an important win. However, the side seems to be lacking some momentum. The squad had appeared to strengthen but still seems to be feeling some absences. Remini Tillotson, Kate Thompson and Ceola Bergin have all been difficult to replace when unavailable.
The foundations however are solid and United will always be difficult to beat. In the 'keeper and back four unit, they have an undoubted source of strength. No one has conceded less in the league. There is quality and grit in midfield and there are goals and pace in attack.
There has also been a great spirit around this group. Phil Trill will have to harness that for the final four games as his side still has the chance to achieve something special this season.
