A businessman was praised for his honesty when he told a judge it was his own fault that he risked picking up five more penalty points to add to the six he already had.
“One more and you could be off the road,” Judge James Faughnan warned the defendant who came before him at Tuam District Court.
“At least you have come in here, and you’re honest and not trying to tell us stories which may or may not be the truth as is often the case,” the judge added.
The defendant said he was running a business and simply neglected to pay his fixed charge penalty notice for a driving offence which would have carried a fine and three penalty points. Because the 56-day window to pay the fine had elapsed, the matter automatically moved on to be dealt with by the courts, and this carried five penalty points instead of three.
The man admitted he already had six points on his licence. Judge Faughnan said that because of his honest approach to the matter, he would postpone imposing the five points for a year, and this would give time for some of the points already on his licence to expire.
