Galway's cross country season gets underway this Saturday with a series of races over the coming weeks locally and nationally.
This Saturday, September 19, Castlegar AC host their open races at Galway Racecourse in Ballybrit. The races incorporate the Galway Senior and Masters championships.
The men’s event is hotly anticipated with some of Galway's best distance runners take to the country on a rolling 7,800m course. Among the favourites will be the likes of Aaron Brennan and Padraig Faherty of Galway City Harriers, as well as Craughwell’s William Fitzgerald and Oisin Davis.
The ladies' event will be another fast affair over 4,350m, with strong athletes such as Craughwell's Helena O'Keeffe, and Nora Tierney and Eimear O'Leary of GCH to the fore. A full programme of juvenile events is also on the card.

Also taking place at Galway Racecourse is the Galway Primary Schools Cross Country championships. The semi-finals take place on Tuesday, September 22 and the finals on Tuesday, September 29. Over 2,500 runners are expected on semi-final day, with qualifiers advancing then to the finals.

The Palace Grounds in Tuam will host the first day of the Galway Athletics Club Cross Country Championships on Sunday, September 27, which will feature the uneven ages for children from U9-U19 ages, along with two adult races.
Road races
Loughrea AC host their annual Grey Lake 10k on Sunday, September 27 at 1pm.
Entry is open now on Eventmaster for €30. Race numbers can be collected on race day from 10am onward in the Temperance Hall on Barrack Street.
