A judge described a defendant before her as a hard-working young man who had behaved “out of character” when she dealt with a public order charge against him.
Judge Fiona Lydon heard at Galway District Court how the man was at the Galway Races and got very drunk.
His solicitor said he was found by Gardaí in Bridge Street in a highly intoxicated condition and had to be arrested as he was a danger to himself and others.
He then “did something very stupid” in the Garda cell and had to be brought to hospital, Sean Acton, solicitor, told the court.
His client was in his thirties, had responsible employment and was appalled to find himself in this position, he pleaded.
“This is a hard-working young man who did something out of character,” Judge Lydon said. She suggested a donation of €300 to the Claddagh Watch charity might be the best outcome in this situation, as this would leave him without a criminal conviction.
