Mains upgrade works by Uisce Éireann in the Lough Atalia Road area of Galway city commenced this week. Crews working on behalf of Uisce Éireann will be on site from this evening (Monday ) to begin work on a programme of works which will see more than 1.8kms of mains replaced with new pipes.
The works are taking place along the R338 (the Moneenageisha Road and Dublin Road ); the R339 (College Road ); and the L-5048-0 (the Lough Atalia Road/Bothar na Long ). The works will also include backyard service upgrades at College Road.
Sections of work are being carried out at night to limit traffic disruption. Night works from the Moneenageisha Road junction as far as the junction of the Lough Atalia Road and College Road will begin this week.
These will be followed by daytime works along the length of the Lough Atalia Road as far as the junction with Fairgreen Road. This section will involve a closure of the footpath on the Lough Atalia side of the road. This will enable two lanes of traffic to be kept open, albeit at a reduced width.
The extensive upgrades will strengthen the local network and significantly reduce the risk of bursts going forward, providing a cleaner, more reliable supply of treated water for local homes and businesses. The works are being carried out in response to persistent bursts, leaks, and other operational issues in the area over recent months.
Enda Mac Namara of Uisce Éireann said every effort is being made to limit disruption as much as possible while these essential upgrades are underway.
“We have designed this programme of works with customers in mind. Key sections of the work are being carried out at night in order to minimise disruption for road users, and we have engaged with local residents and businesses to ensure they are fully aware of the planned works,” said Mr McNamara.
“As well as fewer bursts, the new pipes will provide a cleaner, safer supply of treated water to customers in the area, while helping us toward our goal of driving down rates of leakage on our networks.”
A number of traffic management measures will be put into effect in order to ensure the safety of crews, road users and the general public while these works are underway. These measures will include road narrowing and nighttime lane closures and will be clearly signposted.
Farrans Construction is delivering this project on behalf of Uisce Éireann and works are expected to be completed in early 2027.?
