Thirteen community and voluntary organisations from across the city and county are coming together for Galway Communities in Action, a free, informal celebration taking place on Saturday, September 5, at St Nicholas’ Collegiate Church from 11am to 1pm.
Held to mark the United Nations International Day of Charity, the event will give people an opportunity to discover more about these organisations, meet those behind the services, ask questions, and share their own perspectives on what matters to Galway communities.
The participating organisations work across a range of areas, including early years and youth services, disability support, health and social care, specialist palliative care, homelessness, arts and culture, climate action, community development, and volunteering.
Michael Smyth, spokesperson for Galway Communities in Action, says Galway community and voluntary organisations work with people every day but are often unseen. “Communities in Action is an opportunity to make that contribution visible and, importantly, to bring organisations and the communities they work alongside closer together.
“We want people to come in, meet us and learn more about what is happening across Galway, but we also want to listen. This is an opportunity for conversation – to hear from people about their communities, what matters to them and how we can continue to strengthen Galway together.”
This is the first year of Galway Communities in Action, with the ambition to build on the initiative and welcome more community and voluntary organisations to participate in future years. The initative is supported by The Wheel, Ireland’s national association of charities, community groups, and social enterprises.
The 13 organisations participating in Galway Communities in Action are COPE Galway; Croí Heart & Stroke Charity; Family Resource Centre; Galway Centre for Independent Living; Galway City Community Network; Galway City Partnership; Galway Hospice; Galway Simon Community; Galway Volunteer Centre; Hand in Hand; LINK Galway; SCCUL Enterprises; and Youth Work Ireland Galway.
Galway Communities in Action will take place at St Nicholas’ Collegiate Church, Galway, on Saturday, September 5, from 11am to 1pm.
The event is free; no registration is required and everyone is welcome. There will be music and activities for adults and children.
