University of Galway Mystics are hosting open trials as the team prepares for the new Basketball Ireland Women's Division One National League season.
Two open trials will take place at Kingfisher, University of Galway this week. Trials take place from 7pm to 9pm today (August 27 ) and on Thursday, September 3 at the same time.
As Connacht’s only women’s Division One National League team, Mystics provide players with the opportunity to compete at one of the highest levels of women’s basketball in Ireland while benefiting from high-performance coaching, structured strength and conditioning, and a supportive team environment. The team is coming off a strong 2025/26 campaign, reaching the Division One play-offs before narrowly losing 77-74 to league leaders Cleveland Rockets in a dramatic quarter-final.
New head coach Jose Rodriguez is encouraging players from Galway and further afield to come forward, particularly those who have recently moved to the city for study or work.
“We are building a high-performance team and are very excited for the season ahead,” said Rodriguez. “We would love to meet talented players who are moving to Galway for study or work, as well as players who are already living here or are willing to travel for training.
“We want to provide players from the region and beyond with the opportunity to challenge themselves at Division One level while being part of a team that is continuing to grow both on and off the court.”
Players do not necessarily have to leave their current clubs to play for Mystics, with Basketball Ireland's structured link system allowing players to continue their club involvement while also competing with the Division One team.
