Galway Samaritans is marking 50 years of service to the community with a special celebration for past volunteers and friends of the organisation on Saturday, September 5, from 2pm to 6pm.
The branch is inviting anyone who has volunteered with Galway Samaritans over the years, as well as former supporters and friends, to register their interest by emailing [email protected] before August 25.
The anniversary is an opportunity to recognise the thousands of hours given by volunteers who have provided a listening ear and invaluable support to people experiencing difficult times.
Galway Samaritans estimates that more than 1,000 members of the local community have volunteered with the organisation since the branch was established. Organisers hope the anniversary event will give former volunteers an opportunity to reconnect, reminisce and celebrate five decades of service.
The work remains as important as ever, with the Galway branch receiving an average of around 2,700 calls each month. Samaritans provides a safe and non-judgmental space for people to talk about their feelings, whether they are experiencing suicidal thoughts or simply need someone to listen.
The organisation’s vision is to reduce the number of people dying by suicide, while also understanding and challenging the social factors that can affect mental health.
Samaritans volunteers are available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
