Just one round into the Galway Senior Football Championship and the pressure is already mounting. For those beaten on the opening weekend, another defeat would leave qualification hopes hanging by a thread.
Conversely, opening-round winners Corofin, Mountbellew/Moylough, Salthill/Knocknacarra, Bhearna na Forbacha, Dunmore MacHales and Maigh Cuilinn can all but secure a quarter-final berth with another positive result.
The equation is even more intriguing in Group 4. Annaghdown and St James’ shared the spoils in Round 1, leaving all four teams finely poised heading into a weekend that could dramatically shape the knockout race.
Group 1
Kilannin v Claregalway
Both teams were resoundingly beaten first day out. Claregalway, after two early goals, led Corofin by seven before being outscored 1-16 to 0-2 thereafter.
For Killannin, leaking five goals proved costly against Mountbellew/Moylough in a repeat of last year's preliminary quarter-final, which they won. However, they were heavily depleted without Johnny Heaney, Dara Walsh and Ryan Roche. If that trio remain absent, it might tip the scales in Claregalway's favour, particularly if Cathal Sweeney is unavailable after being forced off early last time out.

Corofin v Mountbellew/Moylough
A repeat of the 2021, 2018, 2017, 2015 and 2009 county finals, all but the first year mentioned went Corofin's way.
Both eased to victory in Round 1 and another win would leave either with one foot in the last eight. Returning Patrick Kelly was among the goals for Mountbellew/Moylough, with Sean Kelly, Tony Shields, Ciaran Mulhern and Colin Ryan also raising green flags. With Eoin Finnerty back and Barry McHugh due back from suspension in Round 3, their attack is impressive. Against Kieran Molloy, Liam Silke, Dylan McHugh and company, though, one suspects they won't find the net five times again.

Group 2
Caltra v Milltown
Both need a response after opening-round defeats. Milltown showed plenty against Salthill/Knocknacarra, leading at half-time before managing just two points thereafter in a 1-13 to 1-7 loss, with Terence Godwin and Eoin Mannion prominent.
Caltra pushed Bhearna na Forbacha closer, drawing level late before conceding the final three scores, although their difficulties securing possession from kickouts proved costly. A Mikey Mulryan return would provide a major lift, but Milltown’s greater senior experience could prove decisive.

Salthill/Knocknacarra v Bhearna na Forbacha
Both arrive with winning momentum, although neither had things entirely their own way in Round 1. Salthill/Knocknacarra recovered from three points down to defeat Milltown 1-13 to 1-7 despite missing several frontline players, with Sean Costello's second-half goal turning the contest.
Bhearna na Forbacha were wasteful but dominant around midfield against Caltra, eventually prevailing 0-14 to 0-11 as county star Cian Hernon impressed. With qualification within touching distance, expect a fiercely contested west Galway derby but Salthill to have too much quality for their neighbours.

Group 3
Naomh Anna, Leitir Móir v Monivea/Abbey
Both enter must-win territory after contrasting opening-round defeats. Naomh Anna, Leitir Móir struggled to turn possession into scores against champions Maigh Cuilinn, eventually falling 1-16 to 0-8.
Monivea/Abbey, meanwhile, suffered heartbreak in a remarkable nine-goal thriller, leading Dunmore MacHales deep into injury-time before Colm Costello struck the winner. Glenn Kelly's superb 2-9 underlined their attacking threat, but defensive improvement is essential especially when facing a player of Oisin Mac Donnacha’s quality.

Dunmore MacHales v Maigh Cuilinn
Dunmore emerged from an extraordinary shootout with Monivea/Abbey, Colm Costello's last-gasp goal completing a 4-17 to 5-13 victory, although conceding five goals is an obvious concern.
Champions Maigh Cuilinn were far more controlled in comfortably seeing off Leitir Móir despite the absence of three fulcrums in Sean Kelly, Peter Cooke and Dessie Conneely. Last year’s group meeting saw Dunmore cause the champions all kinds of problems before being caught late on. Another fascinating battle awaits.

Group 4
St James' v Oughterard
St James' will wonder how they failed to take maximum points from their opener after surrendering an eight-point advantage against Annaghdown, despite an excellent display from Jack Nolan.
Oughterard need a response after suffering a 2-20 to 0-15 defeat to Tuam Stars. With both still searching for a first victory, the stakes are already considerable. The Jimmies showed enough attacking quality in Round 1 to suggest they can make amends, but Oughterard should provide a stern test.

Annaghdown v Tuam Stars
An intriguing clash between a Tuam Stars side buoyed by an emphatic opening victory and an Annaghdown outfit who showed considerable character to rescue a draw against St James’.
Tuam hit 2-20 in disposing of Oughterard and will carry confidence into this one. Annaghdown recovered from eight points down in Round 1, with Conor Quinn’s late intervention proving decisive. Damien Comer also completed the game without scoring, but his presence alone gives the Annaghdown attack an entirely different dimension.
