Sinn Féin TD for Galway East, Louis O’Hara, has welcomed confirmation from Uisce Éireann that a contractor has been appointed to deliver the Mountbellew Wastewater Treatment Plant, following the completion of the tender process. Construction is due to begin in Q4 2026, and O’Hara says the project is critical to support the delivery of housing in Mountbellew.
Speaking today, Deputy O’Hara welcomed the appointment of a contractor for the long-awaited Mountbellew Wastewater Treatment Plant and clarity from Uisce Éireann that works will now commence in Q4 2026.
“This is a really important project for the town of Mountbellew to support its future growth, particularly in terms of housing.
“Planning permission has been granted for in excess of 60 houses at different sites in Mountbellew on the basis of the condition that they cannot be occupied until they are connected to the upgraded Mountbellew wastewater treatment plant,” he said, adding that this underlines the urgency of progressing this scheme to ensure that these much-needed homes can be built and occupied.
“I will continue engaging with Uisce Éireann until this project is delivered and look forward to seeing the scheme completed in future.
“There are many towns and villages across East Galway with deficits in wastewater infrastructure and it is a serious barrier to housing delivery in our area. We urgently need to see investment forthcoming from Government to address these deficits and enable more housing to be built in this region.
