Fr Walter Macken, son of the famous author Walter Macken and Peggy Kenny of Kenny’s Bookshop, died peacefully in Dublin on May 21st last. Fr Walter was a well-known figure both in Galway, where he lived for many years and in Dublin.

He was a priest of Opus Dei and knew and lived with its founder, St Josemaria, for several years.

He was born in London but grew up in Oughterard, went to school in the Jes, and not long after finishing school, went to Rome to study. After ordination he spent a short time in England and then returned to Ireland. He was a prolific preacher and linguist. He wrote a weekly piece for the City Tribune for a number of years, with spiritual and practical reflections on the Gospel.

He enjoyed cycling and covered the streets and roads of Galway in all kinds of weather. He was also a regular swimmer at Blackrock.

A memorial Mass for the repose of the soul of Fr Walter Macken will be held in St Ignatius (the Jes ), Sea Road, next Saturday, July 18th at 10.30am.
