RTÉ News is pleased to announce the appointment of Oranmore man Joe Mag Raollaigh as the new Managing Editor of Nuacht, the Irish Language News and Current Affairs service across RTÉ and for TG4.
As Ireland’s national public service media organisation, RTÉ News and Current Affairs works in partnership with TG4 in the production of Nuacht TG4 and 7 Lá, in line with its overall provision of independent and trusted news and current affairs content across multiple platforms.
A fluent Irish speaker, Joe will have editorial and managerial responsibility for all Nuacht RTÉ, Nuacht TG4 television output, and digital news content in Irish on RTÉ News platforms.
Joe originally began television reporting for TG4 after it was set up in 1996, before going on to be appointed Political Correspondent for TG4 and Nuacht RTÉ in 2004.
Currently RTÉ Political Coverage Editor, Joe has previously held the role of Agriculture and Consumer Affairs Correspondent and edited RTÉ’s flagship political programme The Week in Politics, as well as RTÉ’s Leaders Questions and European Parliament Report programmes. He worked with RTÉ News across radio, television and online since 2008 during which he continued to contribute Irish language reports for Nuacht TG4 and occasionally presented a current affairs programme on RTÉ Radio na Gaeltachta.
Joe Mag Raollaigh said he is very honoured to be appointed to lead and enhance of all our Nuacht output on RTÉ and for TG4.
“I aim to ensure that Irish speakers everywhere are served by the highest quality, impartial and fair reporting, so they are well informed to make their own judgements about the issues that shape all our lives.
“In doing this I will be leading a team of very experienced and highly regarded journalists and production staff whose knowledge and understanding of issues is second to none. Breaking stories, building audiences and making Nuacht more accessible will be my priorities as I take on this important role.”
He was born in Boston, where his parents had emigrated in the 1960s, but the family returned in the early 70s and settled once again in Co. Galway. He has a BA, a Higher Diploma in Applied Communications and a Masters Degree in Modern Irish. He has completed a number of Management and Leadership courses with the Irish Management Institute, UCD Professional Academy, and has 30 years experience working with RTÉ.
Joe will be commencing his new role in August.
