Resurfacing work due to be carried out on Ballyloughane Road has been postponed until next year – because Uisce Éireann plans to dig up the road for pipe laying – local city councillor Terry O’Flaherty has revealed.

She said that, following representations by her, the City Council’s roads department had agreed to carry out resurfacing on the heavily trafficked road as it has deteriorated considerably over the years. This was due to have been undertaken as part of this year’s works programme.

“However, I have just learned that this work will now have to be postponed until next year as Uisce Eireann has plans to dig up the road for pipe laying – it’s disappointing that it won’t go ahead this year, but it makes sense to wait until the works are completed,” the Independent Councillor said.

Councillor O’Flaherty added that Safe Route to Schools programme works, which had been planned for outside Scoil Dara, would also have to wait for the completion of the works by the water utility company.

Responding to her queries, Uisce Éireann has confirmed that it will soon begin a project in the vicinity of Ballyloughane Road to upgrade the local water supply network to facilitate new housing development at Murough.

The company said that initial site investigations would be undertaken over a number of weeks, starting this week, followed by a construction period of a number of months towards the end of this year.

It stressed it had been working closely with Galway City Council to mitigate any impact, and more intrusive site investigation works would be carried out at night to minimise local disruption.

“Depending on the outcome of the site investigation works, we plan to be in site to upgrade these networks in Q4 and the work will take approximately three months to complete,” the company told her in a letter.

The company undertook to consult with all stakeholders, including Gael Scoil Dara, to mitigate the impact of the work locally.

“Some level of disruption is unavoidable with this kind of project, and we appreciate the patience and understanding of local communities while this important work is carried out.”
