Co Galway native Seán de Búrca has taken up the role of President of University of Galway Students’ Union, the representative group of over 20,000 students.
Seán, a BA Government Graduate from Loughrea, Co Galway, was elected by his peers earlier this year having run a concentrated campaign.
“It’s an honour and a privilege to be representing the students of the University of Galway,” said Seán.
“It will continue to be another challenging year for students, in particular, with issues around housing and the cost of living continuing to present barriers for our members.
“University of Galway students will need extra support to ensure that they are able to fully engage with student life.
“Our Union exists to promote, defend and vindicate the rights of our members, at all levels of society, and I look forward to the next year of realising this mission.”
Seán follows in the footsteps of former President Michael D Higgins who was the University of Galway Students’ Union President back in 1964.
He will be working closely with the other SU Officers, including the Vice President/Welfare and Equality Officer Molly Hickey, the Vice President/Education Officer Eimear Burke, and the Vice President for the Irish Language Cathal Ó hÉigeartaigh.
