Annaghdown woman is Connacht's top GAA community hero

Marie Turkington has been awarded the top prize in the Connacht region at the GAA Community Heroes Campaign

The Annaghdown Camogie Club woman's victory ensures her club will receive €5,000 as part of the prize. She was awarded the top prize over Cathal McCormack of Tulsk Lord Edwards GAA in Roscommon.

Now in its second year, the?campaign?recognises the role GAA volunteers play in enriching and sustaining communities around the country. The winners of the awards were announced by EirGrid, the official timing partner of the GAA and Camogie Championships.

"Our congratulations to Marie and Cathal. Their commitment is inspiring and EirGrid is proud to be able to recognise and award such dedication.," said Sinead Dooley, EirGrid's Head of Public Engagement.

"EirGrid was delighted to receive such a large number of truly deserving entries, all demonstrating the exceptional amount of time and energy that volunteers in the GAA give to help their clubs and communities flourish.?"

Over the course of four weeks, EirGrid received almost 80 entries nominating Community Heroes. A winner and runner-up have also been chosen from Ulster, Munster and Leinster. The winners’ clubs will each receive €5,000 and the runners-up’s clubs will each receive €1,500.

The four provincial winners will now go forward to a final round to choose an overall national winner for an additional €5,000 prize.
