Danny Healy-Rae has insisted that a giant statue recently erected in Galway bears no resemblance to himself.
The work entitled ‘Seated Figure’, by artist Sean Henry, was lowered into position on Middle Arch beside the Claddagh Basin last week as part of the build-up to the city’s annual International Arts Festival.
Speaking to the Advertiser, the Independent TD from Kerry said that he sees no likeness between himself and the work of art that many in Galway have alluded to.
“It don’t look like me anyway’,” Deputy Healy-Rae said. “Not a bit in the world.”
The TD was also asked what he thought about the statue as a piece of art.
“I thought it was only a picture, I didn’t know what it was,” he said. “I’m not much into that kind of stuff, I don’t see any likeness to me but people can derive whatever conclusion they come to themselves.
“If it’s amusing some people, ‘tis grand. It’s easy amuse some people and ‘tis hard to get across to more people. It didn’t bother me one way or the other.”
The images of the statue had to be sent by Whatsapp to Deputy Healy-Rae’s daughter Cllr Maura Healy-Rae, and by email to his constituency office, as the TD’s phone cannot receive pictures.
